Indications emerged yesterday that the bill for the establishment of a University for the Nigeria Police Force would be tabled before the House of Representatives today.
The development is part of measures by the Federal Government to boost the human capacity of personnel of the force as well as professionalise its operations.
When established, the university will be known as Police Academy, an equivalent of the Nigerian Defence Academy, which trains cadets for the Armed Forces.
LEADERSHIP investigations showed that a bill, known as Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Bill, 2011, is sponsored by Hon. Umar Katsayal.
When fully operational, the university is expected to encourage the advancement of learning by members of the Nigeria Police without distinction of race, creed, sex, political conviction or religious persuasion.
Other objectives of the university as listed on the bill include the provision of courses of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit of teaching and learning in all its branches in general and the police service.
It is also expected to nurture, equip and produce globally competitive police graduates with requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes suitable for leadership, scholarship, and policing and community service.
The bill reads in part, “Encourage and promote scholarship and to conduct research in relevant fields of learning and human endeavour.
“Relate its activities to the security, social, cultural and economic needs of the people of Nigeria.
