Family members of the late Victor Eghaghe, a police constable at Esigie Divisional headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, told yesterday, how he was killed by his superior Sergeant Folorunso. The constable was allegedly killed in a scuffle that ensued over ‘sharing formula’ for the day’s ‘gains’ at checkpoints.
Though conflicting reports have continued to trail the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of 27-year-old Victor, family members and friends who thronged the Nigeria Union of Journalists press center in Benin city alleged injustice on the part of police authorities, and demanded that the matter be investigated and the culprit brought to book.
His Elder brother Mr Austin Eghaghe, who spoke on their behalf, explained that on the fateful day, he had extended an invitation to his brother to celebrate with him. He however got a telephone call from a police officer at about 2.pm, informing him that his brother (Victor) has been shot dead by armed robbers.
“I ran to Esigie Police station, where the station officer told me that my brother’s remains have been deposited at the University of Teaching Hospital, UBTH morgue. On getting there, my suspicion was aroused when I noticed that only one bullet pierced his head and the spot was hurriedly stitched”.
He said the alleged suspect, had explained that his late brother was shot around 3rd East Circular by Ekiosa market while he and other colleagues sped-off due to the sophisticated weapon of the hoodlums.
“We therefore demand that we should be taken to the scene. Investigation at the scene revealed that there was no attack, let alone gunshot. After thorough investigation, the culprit revealed that my brother was hit by his stray bullet at St. Saviour Road.
“We have petitioned the Inspector General of police and the police commissioner, but justice seems to be far from us. We want justice! We want justice,” the family cried.
