The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ekiti State Government to deproscribe the banned Student Union Governments (SUG) of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti and College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, to avert its planned disruption of the October 1, Independence
Anniversary and 15th year celebration of the state’s creation.
The students’ body made the threat at the weekend, in a statement signed by its President, Mr. Adebayo Ayiti, and made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, the State capital.
According to Ayiti , the students took the position at its extraordinary congress attended by over 700 members from various state-owned tertiary institutions in the state capital last week, where it was resolved that the dissolution of the students’ union in the two higher institutions was anti-democratic and oppressive.
Describing the disbandment of the students’ unionism in the two institutions as antithetical to the tenets of democracy, the students also called for immediate restoration of state bursary to Ekiti students in tertiary institutions across the country and beyond.
He stated further that the State government had no moral justification to scrap the only weapon available to students to fight for the right and emancipation of the students.
