Police Arrest 71 Suspects In Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested 71 robbery and other offences suspects within the last three months even as the commissioner of police, Ibrahim Maishanu, said that the command was faced with a myriad of operational problems.

The commissioner of police in his maiden press conference since he assumed office about three months ago said that despite the problems, the command has been able to take strategic measures to combat crime in the state

In another development, the commissioner said 35 students behind the mayhems at the Federal Polytechnic Bida early this week over the manhood snatching saga were arrested by the police.?
He disclosed that the measures had led to many arrests of hoodlums with two arrests in July, 26 in August and 43 in September for offences ranging from robbery, car snatching, culpable homicide as well as theft and receiving of stolen properties.

One of those arrested, he disclosed, was ? Taiwo Adeniran, based in Kontagora who was involved in illegal dealings of arms and ammunition and was arrested along Bida-Minna road with cartons containing 27 packages of cartridges when a team of stop and search operatives of the command accosted him.

Similarly, two person Peter Nwokedi and Muazu Safiyanu were arrested with N2million fake Nigeria currency which they were taking to some village market to buy farm produces from the unsuspected village traders, while six gang members who specialises in car and motor-cycle snatching were also arrested. The commissioner further disclosed that, apart from the 71 suspected hoodlums, 35 students who were behind the mayhem and destruction of properties at the Federal Polytechnic Bida on Monday over alleged manhood theft were arrested and would be charged to court.
Nine of those who attacked the Chief Magistrate Court II Bida, according to the commissiner, were also arrested and would be charged to court.
