Leadership Newspapers Group yesterday entered into a partnership with a non-governmental organisation, Global Association of Female Attorneys (GAFA) on the war against violence on women.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the media house yesterday in Abuja, the International President, GAFA, Chinelo Iriele explained that the organisation, though a crusader for war against violence on women, was a nexus organisation that champions issues that affect indigent persons globally.?
She said, “unlike other organisations that are gender based, we care for the welfare of? Nigerians in general. We’re a nexus organisation that represent indigent men, women and children.”
Iriele posited that the NGO has taken practical steps to ensure that issues of violence against women got the ultimate punishment in the court of law.
“We have drawn a guideline on how to bring down violence against women. We’ve had series of meetings with members of the Law Reform Commission to ensure that cases, especially of rape, gets convicted in the law courts and we will not rest until the government domesticates law on violence against women,” the president said.
She further revealed that GAFA has played a role in decongesting Nigerian Prisons through its orientation programmes.
Iriele said, “we have been able to decongest the prisons through the services of our legal clinic where we counsel prisoners and awaiting trial inmates. This was done with the collaboration of the Comptroller General of? Prisons.”
She called on the media house to partner with GAFA by always being at hand to educate the public on the activities of the NGO.
In her remarks, the Editorial Director, LEVogue, Lara Olugbemi, who received the GAFA entourage on behalf of the Group Managing Director, Azubuike Ishiekwene assured the association of its willingness to partner? it on the war against violence on women.
She said, “LEADERSHIP will always be ready to partner you in any capacity to ensure that violence against women is eradicated from our society.”
