The peace of Efon-Alaaye in Efon Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was on yesterday shattered when a woman believed to be insane destroyed no fewer than 20 vehicles.
The woman, identified as Olubu Alaure, was said to have woken up around 4.30 am, took a cutlass and broke the windscreens of vehicles parked along Ojodi Street in Efon-Alaaye.
She is now in the custody of the Efon Divisional Police Headquarters where she was taken to by the residents. The town’s Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Ify Abanaofor confirmed that the lunatic is in the station’s custody.
Alaure who is believed to be in her thirties also vandalized some shops in the vicinity in an orgy of violence that lasted till about 6.00 am.
The noise of the lunatic’s attack on cars and shops woke up residents as she wielded the cutlass in her hands menacingly.
She moved from one street to the other with the cutlass in her hands mumbling some unintelligible words.
The lunatic was later overpowered by some residents who had mobilized themselves to prevent her from doing more damage to properties in the community.
One of the victims of the dawn attack, Mr. Femi Awopetu, told reporters that his attention was drawn to the vandalism of Golf car marked HA 383 EFY.
Awopetu said: “It was some people who came to inform me that something has happened to my car around 6 am. When I rushed down, I met this. I don’t know what I can do.
“This is a woman I have seen time and time again. I never suspected she has such problem. This is a car I bought less than a month ago.”
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Efon Local Government, Mr. Joel Omoniyi, who was at the police station to where the mad woman was taken to, promised that the Social Welfare Department of the council would assist the police in their investigation.
