Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have called on President Goodluck and Governor Bababtunde Fashola to erect monuments in strategic locations within the state and country in the memory of the late music legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
This was sequel to a motion entitled “Call to Immortalize Anikulapo Kuti- a Legacy of True Justice,” moved by the member representing Epe Constituency 2, Segun Olulade during plenary session on Monday.
According to Olulade, “Fela was a revered musician, philosopher and social critic whose messages of democratic ethos, true federalism and Pan-Africanism went beyond Africa.
“Fela was truly a patriotic Nigerian, an unrepentant fighter of corruption who stood firm against military dictatorship and civilian maladministration,” Olulade said.
The lawmaker expressed regret that in spite of Fela’s patriotic stance, he has been given little or no national recognition since his demise.
In her contribution, Adefunmilayo Tejuoso, from Mushin 1 Constituency, said Fela should always be remembered for his role in canvassing true democratic government.
According to her, “Fela has been given little or no national recognition since his demise and this should not be.”
Other members who spoke on the achievements of the late legend are Rotimi Olowo, Bisi Yusuf, Omotayo Oduntan, Sultan Adeniji-Adele, Mufutau Egberongbe, Ahmed Omisore and Lola Akande.
The lawmakers also implored President Jonathan to honour the late legend by giving him a post-humous award. Fela was born on October 15, 1938 and died August 2, 1997.
