Academic activities were yesterday disrupted by students of Lagos State University (LASU) who staged a protest against the? increment in their tuition fees.
The students, who trooped out in numbers to protest the increment, blocked entrance to the university disallowing any vehicle to go in or come outside and also switched off the school’s generating set and promised to boycott the local government election if government failed to reverse the decision on? tuition fee.
The students converted the road football field, dancing and playing cards.
With placards they appealed? to Nigerians to prevail on the state government and the school management to? reverse the? new school fee regime.
President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Akeem Olalekan,? said that the? union decided to stage the peaceful protest? to make it known to the whole world and the state government that they could not pay the new fees and that they should leave the fee at what it was before.
“What we want is for them to leave the fee at what it was before, how can you increase a fee for example from N25, 000 to over three hundred thousand, it is not possible, we cannot comply with that new fee,” he said.
Olalekan also said that the students decided to come out and have this peaceful protest to demonstrate? their grievances and that they would not agree with the new rate.
“The Management of the union had meeting and we decided to carry out this peaceful protest?? as a sign of our grievances,”
Also the SUG PRO, Azeez Olateju added, “ the management of the union has ordered the students to boycott the Saturday Local Government elections in Ojo, Egbe Idimu, Amuwo Odofin, Mile 2 and Iba local government areas.
He also said that the students? in their thousands will match to the Governor’s office to inform him about their grievances.
?It will be recalled that the Lagos state government recently announced an increase in the tuition fees of the university.
