A? Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Minna, yesterday, ordered? one Mohammed Jemeel Musa, who allegedly killed his wife to be remanded in Minna Prison? until December 1 this year when his application for bail will be heard.
Musa, a businessman and politician based in Kano, was arraigned before trial Chief Magistrate, Mohammed Gimba Gabi, on a one count charge of culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the criminal procedure code.
The Police Prosecutor in charge of the case, Superintendent Bartholomew Ameh ,told the court that the accused had on the 18th of May this year, at about 22.00hrs checked into a hotel in Tafa local government area of Niger state with his wife Tawakalitu Hadiza Musa using fake names of Ademola Olaniyi.
Mr. Ameh said the accused person later strangulated his wife in the hotel room before disappearing ‘to unknown destination’.
The prosecutor claimed that the accused had confessed to committing the crime but said investigation was still ongoing.
The Superintendent said that the? Police was opposed to granting the accused bail on the ground that the offence was capital in nature and not bailable? especially as it? took the police? six months to arrest the accused after the offence was committed.
He further argued that granting him bail would be detrimental to the course of justice.
“He (accused) was not arrested in his house, he was on the run. If released on bail, he will definitely jump bail because he is aware of the punishment for the offence he has committed” the prosecutor said.
