The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), yesterday, destroyed heaps of marijuana which weighed 24,700kg with a riot act on hemp farmers in Oyo State to beware.
?
The chairman of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, in his keynote address described the burning exercise as the dawn of a fresh onslaught against drug trafficking cartels and said that, “we are adequately prepared for the worst situation, because, this is a must win battle.
?
He stated that the large nature of cannabis seizures recorded in the State required that efforts must be concentrated on drug control measures.
Giade said, “cannabis warehouses have been detected and drugs seized” and added that “owners of property have a responsibility to monitor their use and ensure
that tenants do not engage in illicit drug activities”.
?
However, the State deputy governor, Moses Alake Adeyemo, at the occasion warned landlords who are accomplices to drug barons by allowing their property to be used as warehouse for storage of marijuana to desist from the act as the State government would henceforth confiscate such property.
?
Adeyemo expressed worry over the way some unscrupulous men and women now carry out drug trafficking and said that it was unacceptable to his administration.???
He warned villagers who accommodate foreigners and give them farmlands on which they cultivate marijuana to be watchful and screen all foreigners who indicate interest to get lands for cultivation.
?
Oyo State Commander of the agency, Suleiman Jadi, expressed regret that some unscrupulous persons had started turning Oyo State into one of the Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) producing State in the country.
?
He recalled the recent discovery and destruction of over 80 Hectares of Cannabis Sativa farmlands located in Tola Ajeerun areas in Akinyele and Ido Local Government areas of the state as well as another 60 acres discovered at Gambari Forest Reserved Area to buttress his claim.
