The Rivers State wing of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), has said that media practitioners in the country owe the citizens a sacred duty to use the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to resist all forms of dictatorship at the three tiers of government in the country.
The State Publicity Secretary of the opposition party in Rivers, Mr. Jerry Needam, said that the media had a duty to keep hope alive for the country’s ‘’ democracy through strict adherence to the provisions of the FOI Act’’.
The ACN spokesman observed that the law if properly and strictly observed would hopefully lead the country out of the woods and ensure that the dreams of the founding fathers were realised.
The ACN chieftain, however, commended the efforts of LEADERSHIP in forging ahead despite numerous hurdles on their path and the uncompromising attitude of most government officials in the South-South.
He maintained that the value of the press and its practitioners lay in the fact that no nation would ever survive without the watchdog role of the press, a function that had pitched them against the powers that be.
