Worried? by the state of the Sokoto-Yauri-Kontagora-Ilorin road, the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Works to rehabilitate and dualise it within the shortest possible time in line with the already completed engineering design made for the purpose.
Similarly, in a bid to reduce accidents along the major road, the House has also urged the ministry to construct flyover bridges at Kurna Babaline and Rigiyar Lemo along the Kano-Katsina highway, and directed the committee on Appropriation to ensure that funds for the construction of the bridges were captured in the 2012 budget.
The requests by the lawmakers were contained in two separate motions sponsored by Hon. Abdulahi Salame and Hon Aminu Suleiman during yesterday’s plenary.
Leading the debate on the motion, Salame lamented that the Sokoto-Yauri-Kontagora-Ilorin-Ibadan road, which is a major link between the northern states of Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger and Kwara to other states in the southern part of the country, had now become a death trap due to long neglect.
He expressed surprise that long after the engineering design for the rehabilitation and dualization of the 890-kilometre road was completed, work was yet to commence on the road which, he said, had been abandoned since 1999.
“Due to difficult terrain of the road, several Nigerian citizens are frequently losing their life through incessant accidents on this road,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hon. Aminu Suleiman and 10 co-sponsors presented the motion for the construction of fly.
