UN Secretary-General, Ban ki-moon, has congratulated Nigeria and Cameroon for implementing the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the dispute over the Bakassi peninsula.
Ban said this at a joint meeting with Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission and Follow-up Committee of the Green Tree Agreement on Tuesday.
The delegation from Nigeria was led by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke,? and Prince Bola Ajibola, a member of the court of arbitration at the Hague.
The UN scribe commended President Goodluck Jonathan and Paul Biya of Cameroon for their continued wisdom and leadership, saying the actions of both leaders had demonstrated that statesmanship and preventive diplomacy can succeed.
The peninsula, located on the Gulf of Guinea, had been the subject of intense and sometimes violent disputes between the West African neighbours for decades until they agreed to a UN-backed process to settle the matter.
