A workshop on effective Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for media professionals? has commenced in Lagos.
The three-day workshop is organised by Thistle Praxis Consulting, a management firm which among other things, assists organisations and enterprises, define, and manage their CSR and sustainability needs.
In her presentation, the convener of the programme, Mrs. Ini Onuk, harped on the need for the media to provoke companies to be socially responsible to their host communities through their reports.
She noted that often, media professionals unwittingly report corporate philanthropy or charity as CSR, just as she explained the differences between the concepts.
According to her, CSR must be at the core of every business and form part of its overall strategy and added that a sustainability plan must always form part of a CSR initiative if it must succeed.
A facilitator, Dimeji Belo, observed that stakeholder management was crucial in starting and sustaining CSR and gave one of the factors driving the move towards CSR as “new concerns and expectations from citizens, consumers, public authorities and investors in the context of globalisation and large scale industrial change”.
