Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has described violence against women (VAW) is an atrocity that? should be fought by all citizens.
The human rights boss made this comment at the? launch of the Network of Men United Against VAW held in Abuja recently. He? described people who beat their spouses as criminals who should be prosecuted.
He noted that violence against women? often led to deaths, and even those who survive it have their lives ruined, and maintained that no man or woman should be oppressed to the point of thinking homicide was the only way of escape.
He called on people all over the world to begin to show care on women and to levy consequences on people in both low and high places who fail to do so, saying “till we begin to care about the small things, we will not care for the big things”
Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Zainab Maina, in her address stated that, all over the world, every minute a woman was being violated? and that women faced a lot of violence despite efforts by civil society Organisations (CSOs) and other developmental agencies to stop the trend.
