The era when bills that would not have positive impact on the majority of the citizenry took the time of the members of the House of Representative is over, as the house leader, Honourable Mulikat Akande-Adeola has declared that only quality bills that would impact positively on the people would be debated.

Hon. Akande-Adeola made history by becoming the first female House leader.

Speaking exclusively to leadership weekend, the law-maker, who hails from Oyo state said that the resolution was to ensure that only credible bills are presented on the floor of the House for considerations and debate.

Her words: “We have to scrutinise the bills to ensure that whatever is passed is a bill that will affect the lives of Nigerians positively in any aspect whatsoever.”

She said that the decision was taken by the House leadership that only quality bills are presented on the floor of the House and to earn the respect of the general public.

The majority leader said that the National Assembly had not taken a final decision on the removal of fuel subsidy as negotiations were going on between the presidency and the National Assembly on the proposal.

The lawmaker, however, assured Nigerians that the legislature would be guided by their interest in taking a final decision on the matter.

“I want you to know that the executive and the legislature are still considering a lot of options, nothing has been agreed upon; it is not even in the House yet for debate.
?
“As a representative of the people, whatever I do, whatever I say, whatever I want to partake in is in the interest of the masses and that applies to other representatives as well. We are all interested in the average Nigerian on the street that is going to be affected by the removal of the subsidy”.

Speaking exclusively to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND Adeola-Akande also disclosed that the legislature was working closely with the executive to step up security in the country in light of recent challenges.

Finally, the lawmaker who also spoke on her agenda for the development of women and children in the country said that soon, they will have reasons to smile as she was, in collaboration with the Women Rights committee and the ministry of Women Affairs, making efforts to ensure that the Violence Against Women Bill is given speedy passage.
