Barely two days after a-20 man armed bandits struck in Sagamu in Ogun State, killing more than 10 people, another 15-man gang of armed robbers yesterday struck in Abeokuta killing two people and injuring several others.
The incident which occurred at Okejigbo area of Abeokuta, Capital of Ogun State saw the men of the underworld raiding not less than 30 houses with no resistance from the security agencies.
The robbers were reported to have operated between midnight of Friday and left around 3;am on Saturday, allegedly moving in group from one house to the other without hindrance.
They reportedly killed one night-watchman? identified simply? as Fasasi and one man whose identity could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
One man was also said to have been? hit by bullets during the operation and has been? rushed to the state hospital, in Ijaye.
According to an eye-witness, whose properties was carted away, and who pleaded anornymity, the robbers challenged policemen to dare them and had a successful operation.
Another source? said, some policemen were sighted during the raid, but stayed on the road in the front house of a man called Rosiji, while the robbers were unleashing terror on the people in the houses very close to their check point.
However,? some of the victims told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY? that,? they have reported the case? at Oke-Itoku Police station, while attempt to confirm the claim was unsuccessful as the policemen refused to either confirm or deny the claim.
When LEADERSHIP SUNDAY visited the scene, which is not too far from the palace of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the victims who took turn to narrate their ordeal described? the incident as horrific.
According to one of the victims, who lost some of his valuables, Deacon Babalola, some of the robbers were between the age of 18 and 30 years,one was on mask and all carried dangerous weapons.
They threatened to kill anybody that refuses to cooperate and disposed us of our belonging, some of us lost our laptops, jewelries, huge money among other valuables.
There was concern that, some students living in an hostel (name withheld) might have been injured or raped, but, it was later Confirmed that, the students were not harmed by the robbers, but lost some of their valuables
This was coming barely three days when the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun hosted the Assistant Inspector General of Police from zone 2 and charged the security operatives to be up and doing as the security situation in the state is in a shabby state.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY on phone that he? has not yet been briefed on the matter.
