As part of its effort to reduce the high rate of accidents on the nation’s roads, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has insisted that all drivers of commercial vehicles would undergo a series of medical tests before being issued the new driving license.
The Corps Marshal of FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka, stated this in Osogbo yesterday at a training organized for governors’ convoy drivers as part of FRSC’s efforts to reduce road crashes.
Chidoka who was represented by the Osun State Sector Commander, Mrs. Aderonke Daniel, said the training was in conjunction with Nigeria Governors’ Forum as part of efforts to reduce road accidents and restore sanity to the roads.
He said that the FRSC was worried at the number of lives and property lost daily on the roads and had decided to introduce compulsory medical certification for all commercial drivers in the country.
“Acuity test, blood pressure, epilepsy, blood sugar level, among others, tests would be properly conducted by qualified doctors already selected by the FRSC across the country. We seek cooperation of all stakeholders to make our roads free of accident,“ he pleaded.
He promised Nigerians that efforts that would enhance the performance of drivers would be vigorously pursued, noting that the training would go a long way in reducing crashes and attendant problems.
Meanwhile, at the conclusion of the? training for governors’ convoy drivers, the participants? were presented with ‘Certificate of Participation’ that qualifies them to obtain the new ‘Class V Driver’s License’.
