Anti corruption agencies in the country have been tasked by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Joseph Bodurin Daudu, SAN, to ensure that any corrupt leader is appropriately brought to book irrespective of his status in the society.
Speaking yesterday shortly after delivering a lecture titled “Nigera: A Nation in Democracy or Civil Rule?” to mark the 3rd annual public lecture in honour of Justice Bola Babalakin by the Nigerian Bar
Association, Osogbo Chapter, Mr. Dauda also charged those at the helms of affairs to be upright in their doing.
The NBA President described as worrisome the spate of corruption in the country adding that if the trend is not nip in the bud appropriately, it will spell doom for the nation.
Speaking on quick dispensation of justice in the country, Mr. Dauda stressed that to achieve a smooth and quick dispensation of justice, government should ensure that credible, experienced and versatile judges are considered as judges to effect the needed changes in various courts across the country
He blamed slow pace in dispensation of justice mostly on the inability of law enforcement agencies to make adequate investigation and be able to defend it appropriately.
Dauda opined that responsible police force can also assist in curbing terrorism and corruption if they are adequately equipped and are dedicated to their duties saying that with time, the act of terrorism will become a thing of the past.
Speaking on the nation’s democracy, the NBA President emphasized that there is no substitute to the practice of democracy world-wide adding that military rule has become? an aberration.
He posited that democracy as a system of governance rests on the existence of truth, honour, sincerity and corrupt free society adding that “make shift political arrangements usually give rise to anti –democratic arrangements and institutions”.
