Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday called for the abrogation of the law that tries public officers for keeping foreign accounts describing it as outdated, even as he said his trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal was an attempt by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) to persecute him.
Tinubu, who spoke on arrival at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, gave kudos to the judiciary for standing to uphold the rights of the defenseless, while he challenged the ruling party to provide proof of how he ran the accounts while? in office, in terms of details of transactions, the source of income and other vital information.
Tinubu explained that he remains unperturbed over what he called the harassment by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, alleging that his trial was politically motivated to embarrass him, his party and members of his family.
His words, “For people to use their professional and intellectual capacity to work for Nigeria, they will feel discouraged,? if you don’t abrogate this obnoxious law, it can be easily abused. Have they tried to investigate Dr.? Ngozi? Okonjo Iweala, the current minister of finance? and many other Nigerians from the Diaspora who served during the Obasanjo government and who are now back? Do we say they must close their foreign accounts? How do we encourage them to come home and serve their Motherland?
