President Goodluck Jonathan’s plan to remove fuel subsidy over the weekend suffered another set back from the South – South monarchs who said that the present economic situation is not safe for such policy.
The royal fathers said the president, who incidentally is from the zone, had been communicated on their decision, adding that Nigerians are facing untold economic hardship that might portend bad omen if the fuel subsidy is removed.
Spokesman for the royal fathers, who recently had a retreat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and the Ovie of Uwie, in Delta State, His Royal Majesty, Emmanuel Sidoso, told journalists in Asaba yesterday that it was the opinion of the royal fathers that the Nigerian economic situation was unsafe for the removal of oil subsidy pointing out that there could be better ways of improving the? economy but not through the removal of fuel subsidy.
He said the royal fathers also raised questions over the non utilisation of licenses given to some companies for the building of refineries by the federal government, saying that the building of private refineries would put an end to the importation of fuel. He lamented that the licensees are still importing fuel.
He further disclosed that the traditional rulers were also against the practice of same sex marriage in Nigeria adding that those asking for same marriage should face the wrath of the law.
