As festivities leading to December? pick-up, the National Association of Luxury Bus Drivers has called for adequate and better road signs ahead of police checkpoints to reduce accidents on the high ways.
National Chairman of the association, Mr. Ositadinma Ikwelugo, in Gwagwalada during a chat with journalists, said the call became necessary, following the increasing rate of accidents caused by inadequate signs ahead of police checkpoints, especially at nights.
Lamenting that several lives had been previously lost at police check points; either because there were no signs or the signs were inadequate to prepare the minds of drivers to slow down,
Ikwelugo said his recent experience was between Zuba and Tungamaje in FCT where rocks were used to block the road without signs giving any warning ahead of the checkpoint.
“Immediately the vehicle ahead of my bus was flagged down while on top speed, I was left with no option but to climb the rocks; and that resulted to serious damage on my bus.”
Ikwelugo who said his association was not against police check points, in view of the increasing rate of insecurity in the country but expressed the need to protect the lives of road users.
He said, “The sudden flag down of the vehicle would have amounted to a serious accident because there are no alert signs for the driver of the car to slow him down.
“My appeal to police is to ensure that warning signs are placed at least 10 metres ahead of any check point in the interest of motorists and passengers.”
