The natives of Karshi in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), yesterday rejected a compensation of N12, 000 per tree offer to them by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on their community trees which was cut off by the administration.
A team of officials from the Compensation and Resettlement Office, FCTA, who visited the area to offer the government compensation to the natives were told to return the money on the grounds that the amount did not reflect their agreement with the FCTA.
In a chat with LEADERSHIP, the spokesman of the community, Alhaji Musa Yaro, decried the efforts by the government on the matter, saying that it was an insult on the community for the FCTA to offer them with that little amount as compensation.
He said, “We rejected the money because it cannot buy them anything; talk less of building a place for them. We also asked the government about our allocation, but they are saying they will relocate us outside the village and up till now, there is no sign for that.”
Speaking in the same vein, another native of Karshi,? Mr.? Kashim Isyaku, urged the FCTA to temper justice with mercy, saying that the administration should settle them the way other people were settled.
When LEADERSHIP visited the Hakimi of Karshi, he said that the FCTA should increase? compensation, saying that? the said N12, 000 was inadequate for? human being.
He appealed to his people to approach the matter with wisdom and give the FCTA? a little time to do the right thing.
