It was a bloody day in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, yesterday, when gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, killed a policeman and four others at two different locations in the city.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the hoodlums, who also wounded a passer-by during the robbery operations, catered away unspecified amount of money and GSM recharge cards.
It was also gathered that the police sergeant, who was attached to Multi-Net, a Port Harcourt-based telecommunication firm and two staff of the company were killed when the hoodlums ambushed them along Rumuola-Rumuokwuta Road, near a first generation bank.
The robbers were said to have opened fire on the trio, who were riding in a Volkswagen Jetta car, killing them and wounding a passer-by, before making away with the GSM recharge cards found in the car.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the hoodlums also opened fire on persons, whose identities could not be ascertained immediately, killing them in front of a new generation bank located at the popular GRA junction, Aba Road in the State capital.
The hoodlums were said to have made away with an unspecified amount of money, which the duo had withdrawn from one of the banks located within the vicinity.
However, when contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State, Mr. Benjamin Ugwuegbulem confirmed only the incident at Rumuola-Rumuokwuta Road involving a policeman and two others.
Ugwuegbulem, a Deputy Superintendent Of Police (DSP), said that the trio were rushed to a nearby hospital immediately after the incident where the doctor confirmed them dead while the passer-by who was injured by the robbers’ stray bullet was rushed to Teme Clinic, Diobu for treatment.
