The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Moses Onireti, has said that security agencies were still capable of curtailing crime in the country irrespective of the nefarious activities of criminals.
Onireti was speaking while delivering a lecture entitled: “Security Threat As Challenges to Nation’s Fledging Democracy- The Police Perspective” at the press centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ibadan.
“Irrespective of the activities of the criminals in the country, security agencies are still up to the task of curtailing them,” he said.
Represented by Mr Benjamin Opara, a Chief Superintendent of Police, Administration, Oyo Police Command, Onireti said the most important factor that would ensure peaceful co-existence and proper security was good governance.
He urged the Federal Government to make adequate budgetary allocation? for security in the 2012 budget.
Onireti attributed the causes of insecurity to unemployment, corruption, poor infrastructure and anti-people policies.
He decried ethnic bigotry and militancy, which had led to the struggle for political power in the country.
He condemned the activities of the Boko Haram group, adding that the security agencies in the country would put a stop to it.
