A suspected member of the religious extremist sect, Boko Haram, met his waterloo yesterday, after he detonated on explosive at the London Chikin ward of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The early morning blast which sent fears down the spines of the residents because of its thunderous sound, was said to have damaged valuable properties in the area, including a Volkswagen Golf car with which the deceased carried out his nefarious activity.
Confirming the incident, the Operation Field Commander of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Col. Victor Ebhamele, said, “A Boko Haram member was killed in the blast when he detonated an explosive at Tashan Bala in London chiki ward of Maiduguri this morning.”
According to Ebhamele, some arms and explosives were recovered in the wreckage of his car.
In a similar event, a roadside petrol hawker was on Monday night shot dead by gunmen suspects to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram near NNPC depot Maiduguri. An eye witnesses at the scene recalled that, the sect members came in a red golf car and opened fire at the man killing him instantly, before fleeing to unknown place.
Also, on the same Monday night, a police officer was shot dead in Kumshe ward of Maiduguri in front of his house; no arrest has yet been made over the killings.
LEADERSHIP has meanwhile gathered that since the Tuesday morning blast, soldiers around the area have been placed on high alert.
