A housewife, Yahadasu Sani, of Tudun Wada area in Kaduna on Wednesday at a Kaduna Sharia Court, insisted on returning the dowry paid by her husband, Danjuma Ali, to end their five months of marriage.
Sani was at the court to seek the dissolution of the marriage, following what she called consistent disagreement with the husband. She said that she had lost interest in the marriage and prayed the court to allow her to refund the N5,000 paid he for her as dowry as, according to her, all her efforts to make relationship work had failed.
“This is the reason why I filed the case for amicable resolution,’’ she said.
She said her action was in line with Sharia law and pleaded with the court to grant her prayers.
In his submission, Ali? said he still loved his wife and would go to any extent to sustain the marriage. He appealed to the court to broker peace between them, instead of accepting the prayers of the wife.
He said he could not vividly remember the exact amount he paid to her as dowry.
The presiding officer, Usman Ibrahim, told the couple that the court would only dissolve the marriage after failing to reconcile them.
Ibrahim, however, said that it was important for the couple to know that marriage was a mutual contract between the parties and would only be dissolved if any of them lost interest.
He advised them to sort out their differences and directed their guardians to appear before the court during the next adjourned date.
He adjourned the case to December 20, for continuation of hearing.
