Gov. Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers has urged the Federal Government to allow states to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in their states.
In a statement in Port Harcourt on Tuesday Amaechi said, “The Federal Government should accommodate states willing to participate in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in the country.''
Amaechi said that the Rivers Government had generated 180 megawatts of electricity to guaranty steady power supply in the state.
“But the 180 megawatts has remained dormant and non-operational due to the Federal Government's exclusive right to distribute power in the country.''
He appealed to the National Assembly to intervene so as to ensure that the policy was reversed and urged the Federal Government to reimburse the state the money it spent on the power project.
