Assistant coaches of Nigeria’s U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets have rejected a N350,000-monthly pay, according to top officials of the federation. The Eaglets chief coach is Manu Garba, while his assistants are Emmanuel Amuneke, Nduka Ugbade and Emeka Amadi.
But an official of the football body said: “The head coach for the Eaglets is on N750,000, while his assistants are to be on N350,000 each, but they have turned down the offer.”
Both John Obuh and his immediate successor, Monday Odigie, received N150,000 a month as salary. And their assistants were on N40,000 allowances each a month.
This rejection is believed to have stalled the start of a training camp for the country’s schoolboys as the assistant coaches are insisting on at least N500,000 a month.
Nigeria is a three-time world champion in the U-17 category and failed to qualify for the last two African Junior championships.
Meanwhile, former Ethiopia coach Tom Saintfiet is likely to become Nigeria’s technical director following a nod by the NFF technical committee to engage him. The appointment of the 38-year-old Belgian is expected to be endorsed by the NFF executive committee during the federation’s AGM in Kaduna before the end of the year.
