Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has disclosed the commission’s plans to canvass the establishment of an Electoral Offences Tribunal (EOT).
Prof Jega disclosed this in Abuja yesterday he received the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetzke Wenzel who had paid him a visit.
The move, according to the INEC chairman, is to fast-track resolution of election-related offences and to check impunity, a major sore point of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Jega told the visiting diplomat at the commission’s Abuja headquarters that INEC would be exploring the opportunity provided by the constitutional amendment of the Electoral Act next year to push for the establishment of the special tribunal.
