Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, has been accused of abandoning the path of accountability, following his administration’s review of projects initiated by the immediate past governor of the state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, the Sardaunan Kano.
Kwankwaso had last weekend while addressing journalists on his administration’s economic policy thrust, noted that the various projects initiated by Shekarau had been suspended and their costs are to be reviewed.? He accused Shekarau’s administration of lacking financial discipline and inflating cost of projects.
But responding to Kwankwaso’s statements, Sule Ya’u Sule, the Senior Special Assistant to Shekarau said, “Throughout the eight years of Shekarau’s government, the finance commissioner rendered monthly account of all state government incomes and expenditures, whereas presently, nobody knows precisely how much government has earned or spent on which projects.”
He said that Shekarau’s administration was so transparent in its accounts that it received praises from the World Bank and other institutions.
On the situation in Kano State, Sule said that contracts are “directly awarded from the Governor’s Office without recourse to due process.” This, he noted, has led some commissioners in the state to threaten to resign.
“A situation where a single individual is awarded a N9billion contract without due process raises lots of suspicion and questions,” Sule said.
He wondered why the Kwankwaso administration was yet to come out to explain the reasons behind the resignation of the Chairman of (Kano) State Universal Basic Education Board given the controversy surrounding his sudden and unceremonious departure.
