Panic on Tuesday night gripped? the people of Birniwa Local Government Area of Jigawa State following an attack allegedly unleashed on a police divisional office by dozens of unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram in which a teenage girl was killed and one police officer injured.
The suspected hoodlums were said to have stormed Birniwa town from an unknown direction and started? shooting? at police officers from all directions just as the men on duty were said to have? found it difficult to counter the attack, only managing to escape from the scene.
After invading the police divisional office,? the suspected gunmen allegedly? planted an explosives device which was later? deactivated by the anti- bomb squad mobilised to the venue from the police headquarters in Dutse.
Our source also gathered that, during fire exchange between the police and the gunmen numbering over 20, one police officer was injured while a 13- year- old girl was killed by stray bullet when she was scampering for safety together with some other people in the area.
When contacted,? the Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, Mr. Hashimu Argungu confirmed the incident, saying that “yes, some gunmen had attacked a police station in Birniwa, killing a teenage girl and injuring a police officer. They? also? planted a bomb in the station which was later detonated by our bomb squad”.
He stated that, none of the attackers were injured or arrested by the police as he claimed that the gunmen fled? the area before the reinforcement sent from Hadejia zonal headquarter reached the scene.
