Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila has? said that the House will initiate moves to amend? the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) Act,? following the subsidy removal by the Federal Government.
Kawu stated this yesterday while speaking to journalists in Abuja.
According to the lawmaker, he is sponsoring a bill to that effect on the grounds that the purpose of establishing the agency has been defeated.
He said, “The Act establishing the PPPRA was the making of the National Assembly and we have decided to repeal it,? so that we can save Nigerians from the agonies foisted on them by this monster agency. I am sponsoring a bill which will seek to repeal the PPPRA? establishment Act or in the alternative,? amend the section which gives it the unilateral powers to increase prices of petroleum products”.
Kawu further disclosed that over 200? members of the House? had endorsed the amendment of the PPPRA Act.
“We have obtained the consent of over 200 members of the House who have endorsed the move and we are also talking to the Senate so as to give it? concurrence as soon as we pass it because we will give the bill an accelerated passage”, he added.
Kawu said the subsidy removal by President Goodluck Jonathan was a violation of the 2011 Appropriation Act as amended on the grounds that? its lifespan extends to March, 2012.
He also reaffirmed the resolve of the lawmakers to make provisions for budget subsidy in the 2012 budget, saying? that, “the powers of appropriation is constitutionally vested in the National Assembly therefore we will bring it back the subsidy allocation”.
