Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN-Lagos) has urged Nigerians living abroad to impress on their compatriots back home on the essence of voting in credible leaders to govern them.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the Nigerian community in India, Dabiri-Erewa identified bad leadership as the major problem facing the country.
She said that the situation would change only when Nigerians voted credible people into government.
She stressed the need for every Nigerian, whether at home or abroad,? to make his voice heard so as to move the country forward.
On the issue of discrimination against Nigerians in India, the lawmaker assured them that the government was always ready to protect its citizens everywhere in the world.
“On behalf of the Nigerian parliament, I assure you that we will look into your issues. India has Ministry of Overseas Affairs and we are seeking to establish the Nigerian Diaspora Commission to take care of you.”
Dabiri-Erewa urged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria in India, adding that Nigerians remained “the best people in the world”, in spite of all negative accusations against them.
Also speaking, Rep Bimbo Daramola said that the committee might involve the Indo-Nigeria Joint Commission in the investigation of? the various complaints by Nigerians living in India.
Daramola commended the Nigerian High Commissioner to India, Mr Oyebola Kuku, and his team for their proactive and fatherly role in addressing all the issues affecting the Nigerian community in India.
Earlier, Mr. Godwin Idiong, the President, All India Nigerian Students and Community Association (AINSCA), called for the committee’s intervention to alleviate the racial discrimination against Nigerians in India.
Responding, Kuku assured the visiting lawmakers and members of the community that all the outstanding issues affecting Nigerians would be addressed by the mission.
However, it was reported that more than 10,000 Nigerians reside in India.
