The police have arrested more than 200 persons over Wednesday's? riot and ?attack on? Lambatta Police station in Gawu Babangida Local Government Area of Niger, an official said.
Alhaji Atiku Karfur , the Assistant Inspector General of Police? (AIG) ?in-charge of Zone 7, said in Minna on Thursday? that 65 suspects? were arrested ?at Lambatta, while attempting to sack the police station.
He said although the mob could?not sack the?station, but a senior police officer was injured in the process.
Karfur said the mob?failed in?the attempt because the police overpowered them and arrested those with dangerous weapons, such as locally made pistols and cutlasses.
?He, however,?said no one was killed in?the incident.
“In fact, the hoodlums had surrounded my car and challenged us. Therefore, my men had to act, leading to the arrest of these hoodlums,” he said.
?Karfur said 86 persons were arrested for attacking government and private buildings in Minna and explained that the suspects were miscreants, who hijacked the labour, organised protest to achieve political goals.
He said some of the suspects were caught?looting after setting some places ablaze, while 61 others were arrested for attempting to break the curfew in the state.
The officer also said 27 others were arrested for other offences.
?Karfur said the situation?is calm at the moment in Minna and that the police?were still studying the situation with?a?view to?advising the state government on what to do,? especially? in respect of the curfew.
?He urged the public to report suspicious persons or movement around them to the police and avoid any act that could cause the breach of the peace.
