The South East caucus of the House of Representatives has urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, zonal caucuses of the House of Representatives and other stakeholders to stop targeted killings of Ndigbo in the northern part of the country.
This was contained in a press statement issued to newsmen after the caucus held a press briefing on the issue, yesterday, at the National Assembly.
Chairman of the caucus, Hon Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, who spoke for the committee, said that as political leaders and representatives of their people, they have been, over the last couple of weeks, restraining Ndigbo from carrying out reprisal attacks and added a warning that “enough is enough”.
According to him, “while the country’s current security challenges is public knowledge, the recent shift in focus from random shoot and run and bomb attacks by suspected Boko Haram, to selected and targeted hits against Ndigbo is a trend difficult to fathom, thereby provoking reasonable grounds for growing suspicion and speculation among many Nigerians that the attacks could be construed as a smokescreen for ethnic cleansing.
“We demand that all stakeholders in the Nigerian project who believe in the unity and oneness of the country should rise up and take proactive measures to denounce this growing characterisation by ensuring that the selected and targeted attacks against the Ndigbo stop forthwith”.
