Bank Officials Explain Challenges On E-Payment Of Workers’ Salaries

Three banks officials said on Wednesday in Lagos that the delay in the e-payment of Federal Government workers’ salaries was due to network problem and banks’ internal challenges.

The officials from First Bank, UBA and Union Bank gave the explanation separately.

An official of First Bank Plc, Marina, who pleaded anonymity, said that network challenges from the service providers hindered the smooth operation of the e-payment system.

The source said that another challenge was that sometimes the organisation's account may not be credited on time from the Accountant- General’s office.

He further said that the delay in sending the names of the workers to the bank might also delay the payment of salaries.

“The ability to effectively put the two factors identified above right will pave way for the online real-time payment of workers’ salaries,” he said.

Similarly, Mr Ramon Nasir of the Corporate Affairs Department of UBA, Marina, said that the domiciliary account of the organisation played a vital role in fast tracking the e-payment banking.

Nasir said that the delay in sending the list of schedules for various accounts could also pose challenges to the efficient operation of e-payment.

?“If the organisation responsible for the payment of workers’ salaries has its account domiciled in First Bank, it will be easy for workers to receive their money faster than those using other banks,” he said.

Also commenting, Mr Francis Barde, the Head, Corporate Affairs Department, Union Bank Plc, said that since banks were now operating e-payment, network problem might pose greater challenges to prompt payment of salaries.

Barde also said that non-availability of the Point of Sales (POS) challenges could also hinder e-banking transaction and prompt posting of workers’ salaries.

“There is no need generalising the problems facing e-banking because it varies from bank to bank,” he said.
