The Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association has dragged the federal government before a Lagos High Court over the deployment of soldiers on the streets of Lagos.
The applicants are also asking the court to award them N100 million against the respondents, “being special, aggravated, punitive and general damages against the Respondents, jointly and severally for their violation of the fundamental rights of the applicants.”
The suit which has as applicants, the Chairman of the Lagos NBA, Taiwo Taiwo, Alex Muoka, Secretary and Ebun Adegboruwa as applicants has the president, minister of defence, Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force and the Attorney-General of the Federation as respondents.
According to suit, the applicants want “an order directing the Respondents to withdraw, redeploy and vacate all armed soldiers, policemen, state security services and other military officers stationed in major streets and public places in Lagos State for the purpose of preventing, stopping, aborting and frustrating the peaceful gathering, assembly and meeting of the applicants and other lawyers medical doctors, students, artisans, activists, professionals, actors, actresses, musicians, entertainers, market men and women, journalists and other citizens of Nigeria in Lagos State in violation of their fundamental rights.”
