Niger Govt To Compensate Victims Of Violent Subsidy Protests

Niger government, on Wednesday assured victims of the recent violence which erupted in Minna over the removal of fuel subsidy, that it would offer adequate compensation to them.

Alhaji Yahayah Dansallau, Chairman of the 13-man committee set up by the government to investigate the matter, gave the asurance in Minna after visiting some of the victims.

“We have seen government and private properties that were destroyed, including individuals who sustained injuries.

“The responsibility of our committee is to assess what has happened and make recommendations to the state government, and our assessment is on-going.

“After our recommendations the government will take a decision on how to come in and compensate the victims, including the public institutions affected”, he said.

Dansallau, who is also the state Commissioner for Health and Hospital Services, assured the victims that the committee would not discriminate in its recommendations to the government.

“We are taking inventories of all the affected persons and public institutions, after which we will make our recommendations and submit same to the state government.

“Everybody, whether it is private or government, is adding value to the state, so we are going to look at everything together”, he assured.

He also said that the government would settle the medical bills of those injured in the violence, adding: “we will ensure that all the affected persons and public institutions are compensated by the state government,” he said.

He appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to assist the state government in compensating those affected.
