The authorities of the 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt said it was the collaboration between it and the Rivers State Command of the State Security Services (SSS) that foiled a planned bomb attacks on the Port Harcourt Barrack, popularly called ‘Bori Camp’ and other public structures in the state capital on December 25, 2011.
Commander of the 2 Brigade, Brigadier-General Tukur Buratai told journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday, that the terrorists, whose link with radical sect, Boko Haram was yet to be ascertained, had also planned to attack the Shell Residential Area, located along Aba Road as well as Bongaivilla Hotel, located at the GRA in the state capital.
Buratai disclosed that with the combined efforts of the Nigerian Army and the SSS, those behind the planned bomb attack were arrested within the Port Harcourt Barracks and other locations in the capital city.
He said the suspects were found with materials for making Impoverished Explosive Devices (IEDs), which were capable of causing heavy damage, adding that the suspects, having confessed to the crime would soon be arraigned in court accordingly.
The Brigade Commander said although a soldier was among those that were arrested over the incident; he was later released after proper investigation revealed that he was not part of the plot.
