The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) says 108 persons died in road accidents in Plateau last year, while 1,488 others suffered severe injuries.
A statistics made available by FRSC, said the number of deaths increased by four as against the104 recorded in 2010.
The Plateau Sector Commander, Mr Samuel Odukoya, said the FRSC recorded 222 road accidents in 2011, as against 247 in 2010.
According to him, 44 cases are fatal, 165 cases are serious while 13 cases are minor.
Odukoya attributed multiple road accidents to human, mechanical and environmental factors, pointing out that human factor constituted 90 per cent of the road accidents in 2010.
The sector commander attributed the low rate of road accidents in the state in 2011 to many check-points along the roads.
“Another factor that brought about the reduction in the accident rate was the commission’s constant operations on the roads, which served as checks on drivers’ recklessness.”
Odukoya expressed optimism that the number of road crashes would further be reduced in 2012, as the commission had put in place necessary measures to reduce road accidents.
He, however, advised drivers to always ensure that their vehicles were in good condition before putting them on the roads.
Odukoya also advised motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations and refrain from the use of cell phones while driving.
