Dr Felix Igwe, the Chairman of ASUU, River State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, says the national body of the union is not in a hurry to suspend its seven-week-old strike.
Commenting on the speculation that the union may suspend its strike on Jan. 23, Igwe told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday that the industrial action was still very much on.
He said the union could not suspend the strike without convening a meeting of its National Executive Council.
Igwe explained that “ASUU takes its decisions based on the mandate of the congress, and only when the congress has met can a decision be taken on the strike”.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruquyyatu Rufai, had announced last week at the end of a meeting with ASUU that the strike would be called off on Jan. 23.
Igwe confirmed that although the Federal Government had agreed to implement some aspects of the 2009 agreement reached with ASUU, the situation in the two state-owned universities could not be said to be alright yet.
He said the Rivers Government had failed to address other internal issues in the institutions.
