National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have been described as? catalysts for harmony, peace and development and must be cherished and protected.
The Director General, DG, of the scheme, Brigadier General Nnamdi Okore-Affia said this while addressing the 52 corps members honoured recently by President Goodluck Jonathan. This was just as he added that the safety and well-being of corps members were dear to the management of the scheme.
The DG expressed the need for the establishment of an IT- based distress call centre to facilitate rapid response to emergency calls by corps members and their officials nationwide.
Okore-Affia said that the management was spurred by the vision to work harder at transforming the scheme in tune with current realities without losing sight of the validity of the scheme’s core mandate in the context of Nigerian polity and pointed out that the scheme has commenced an internally propelled effort of re-aligning its operations to accommodate productive skills acquisition and other empowerment initiatives for corps participants.
“Consequently, we are carrying out a total review of the content of our orientation course programme to give room for innovation necessary in the optimisation of the scheme’s benefits to the nation. “We deeply appreciate the members of the National Assembly for being supportive of the scheme as it grapples with its various challenges. Their support has given us added impetus to pursue vigorously, the vision and mission of a more responsive and result-oriented NYSC,” he said.
