Amnesty International (AI) has accused the Federal government of not doing enough to tackle the worsening Boko Haram terrorist activities ravaging the northern part of the country.
In its reaction to the continuing terrorist attacks in the city of Kano and Bauchi State, AI said yesterday that innocent civilians have been caught between Boko Haram’s terrorism and Nigeria’s counter-terrorism measures which have failed “to prevent, investigate, prosecute or punish these acts.”
While condemning Boko Haram’s activities, it called on the Federal Government to “invest in reforming the criminal justice system to prevent more human losses in Northern Nigeria” and also to investigate the crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The group condemned the extrajudicial approach response to the Boko Haram crisis as security agents make sweeping arrest and disappearance of suspected members of Boko Haram and the detention and ill-treatment of women and children related to suspected members of Boko Haram in order to elicit information from them.
The global human rights watch group called on the Federal Government to put in place mechanism that would guard against further loss of lives in the hands of terrorist activities and counter-terrorist measures.
