The federal government on Thursday bowed to pressure mounted on it by governors of the 36 states of the federation that it should refund the sum of N350 billion being the sum total of funds spent by state governments on federal roads.
This was the decision taken at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held at the presidential villa Abuja. NEC comprises all the state governors, Central Bank Governor, Attorney General of the Federation and the minister of finance, with the Vice President as the presiding officer.
Briefing State House Correspondents after the NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji alongside his Adamawa, Ondo and Katsina counterparts said the refund of the money spent by states on federal roads became necessary if roads across the country must be well maintained.
Mimmiko said, “The federal government has mandated the federal ministry of works to speed up work on the verification and harmonisation of claims on states spending on federal roads to ensure that the states are reimbursed their spending in this regard.
