The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Rivers chapter, has appealed to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to provide relief materials for the victims of the Bonga oil spill in the state.
The Chairman of the association, Dr Chris Mbata, said in Port Harcourt on Thursday that it would be unjust to leave victims of the spill without immediate relief to cushion the effects of the disaster.
The massive oil leak had occurred at the Bonga platform OML 118 on Dec. 20, 2011 causing serious spill and damage to sources of livelihood in Odioma and neighbouring communities in Bayelsa.
Mbata said the spill had left the community without water and other essential facilities, adding that they should be assisted to regain their socio-economic status.
“They have to be made to live their lives. It is a matter of right; they should not suffer because of the presence of oil in their land.”
He also urged the company to commence direct discussion with members of the community to ensure a meaningful resolution of the crisis.
“The solution to whatever problem caused by the spill lies in the company's approach to the issue. There should be direct discussion with the people.
“Those who will handle the dialogue should demonstrate human kindness and sincerity of purpose to elicit the cooperation of the community.”
