The Lagos State Government on Wednesday sealed off the popular Mile-12 Market in Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, LCDA over various environmental offences, even as it? threatened to close down Oko Oba Abattoir and Lairage in Agege Local Government Area of the state .
The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello told newsmen the closure became necessary following failure by the market leaders to comply with the state government directives on ensuring sanity in the market area.
He listed three environmental offences committed by the traders to include: inability to control drivers of Lorries that discharges foodstuff, that is, lack of traffic discipline, poor sanitary conditions and indiscriminate parking by customers along the highway, among others.
According to him, “We had a stakeholders’ meeting with the market leaders earlier where they promised to comply with the directive, but after specified period of time for them to abate without any improvement, the state government has to move in to save the deteriorating situation.”
