The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has assured women in the State of 50 per cent slots in both appointive and elective positions in government at the state, local and ward levels.
The state chairman of the PDP, Chief Godspower Ake, who gave the assurance in Port Harcourt when the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Judith Amaechi visited him, disclosed that the slots would begin with the forthcoming ward congresses of the ruling party.
Ake said: “It is very pertinent to note that women are worthy partners and have demonstrated this in all ramifications, the party has resolved to allot 50 per cent slots to women because they have not failed the party.”
Earlier in her speech, wife of the governor, Mrs. Judith Amaechi said that she was at the PDP secretariat to show appreciation to its leadership for championing the cause of women and allocating more appointive and elective positions to women in their effort to? actualise their quest for 35 per cent affirmative action.
The governor’s wife said: “I want to thank you very profoundly for your support to my husband and being a strong pillar of hope and to thank you immensely for supporting women’s quest for political empowerment in the state.
“Women’s quest for political empowerment is in line with the campaign of the women for change and development, initiated by Dame Patience Jonathan, first Lady of Nigeria, and the gender-sensitive administration of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Your support has awakened political consciousness of our women and we humbly beg that you give us more. We are partners in progress and will always support our men to do more for our dear state.
