The Lagos State police command has declared zero tolerance? for human rights abuses by its officers and men.
Spokesman for the command Joseph Jaiyeoba made the declaration in an interview with newsmen on Saturday in Lagos.
?Jaiyeoba said that the command’s position was in consonance with the recent directive of the Acting I-G on human rights.
the Acting I-G, Mohammed Abubakar, during a meeting with all police public relations officers on Feb. 10, in Abuja, urged them to champion and maintain high human rights.
Abubakar also charged them to revive the Public Complaints Bureaux in their commands.
Jaiyeoba warned that the Lagos command would not tolerate any act of lawlessness and abuse of human rights by any officer.
He said that the command had concluded plans to enlighten its officers and men, through workshops, to those things that constituted human rights abuses.
“The workshops are to enlighten our men on the I-G's stand on human rights. We will have some professionals, including journalists, who will talk to our men on human rights,” Jaiyeoba said.
The spokesman said that suggestion boxes would be provided in all police formations across the state to enable members of the public to drop their complaints.
Jaiyeoba urged members of the public to re-educate themselves on their rights, stressing that the knowledge of their rights would save them from exploitation by any officer.
“If you did not commit any crime and you are sure of being on the side of the law, if you are arrested for doing nothing wrong, we assure you that such police officer(s) will face the human rights officers,” he added.?
