Given the vulnerability of street sweepers to hazards and road accidents, Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, yesterday said plans are in the offing by his administration to increase the salary of street sweepers in the state.
This was just as he also promised to look into their health and insurance cover in the course of their service to the state.
Fashola, who spoke at a forum with over 10,000 street sweepers, held at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos, urged the sweepers to rise up to the new challenge and demand of keeping the state clean, saying the benefits for their services were numerous.
While responding to questions and requests made by the sweepers on issues bothering mainly on their welfare, the governor revealed that he had already approved for a pay increase for the them as well as other special bonuses.
He hinted that the commencement would only take effect if he sees improved performance from the sweepers, pointing out that he never made the promise of paying the sweepers N18,000 minimum wage.
